Quotes for Sami Hyypia
"When I played in Holland for Willem II nobody knew me as I played in quite a small team. Since I joined Liverpool everybody in Holland is interested in me."

Sami Hyypia

"The chance to go into the Champions League with the team I supported as a boy would be fantastic. If anybody had told me three years ago that I would be playing for Liverpool and we would be third in the Premiership I would have just laughed at them and said they were crazy.
The boss was very brave for bringing in so many new faces all at once last summer. He is a good manager with a very good eye for players. He has a great knowledge of footballers all over Europe. That is why he was not scared to sign so many like me - players who no-one had ever heard of."

Hyypia in March 2002

"I have no doubt Sami is one of the world's best defenders. He is the perfect captain, takes responsibility and gives everything for the team. When we go into the huddle and have our brief pep-talk, Sami is always boss. Everybody respects him because we know he always gives 100 per cent.
If something needs done, Sami is the one we talk to because he goes and does it. I like that about him. I have already learned a lot from him since I joined the club. If I've made a mistake in a match I ask Sami what I should have done and he gives me advice. He is a guy who holds everyone together when we need him most in hard games and tough atmospheres."

John Arne Riise in 2003

"Of course I am not happy about it. But I feel relief now that I can get used to the idea that I am not captain anymore. I don't feel myself as a worse player because I don't have the armband anymore.

There was nothing dramatic over changing the captaincy. I didn't say anything because it was the manager's decision and I respect that. I believe that captaincy will bring Gerrard to a new level. He's a young and talented English player, who has a great future ahead of him.

I am not happy about our start to the season. We have to play better and we will do that. If the change of captaincy helps, then it's a good decision."

Hyypia lost his captaincy in October 2003

"Obviously I spoke to Sami and his response was typically first class. He respects the decision and there was no bitterness or resentment. I know Sami will recognise this is a decision I've taken for the team. I have thought long and hard about this. This is not something which should be seen as against Sami. He has been a good captain for us and lifted six trophies. This decision will help Sami. I think he was ready to take on too much responsibility at times."

Houllier

"I’ve enjoyed giving our big defender plenty of grief since I scored against Finland in a World Cup qualifier. He was once spotted on a dance floor but reports say he was not exactly the most graceful thing on two legs, allegedly. Hasn’t been allowed to forget it."

Owen in 2001 on Sami

I want to stay at Liverpool, there is no doubt about that. We will see what happens. There have been no talks yet but I have a year left on my contract and I am doing my best. In football, you are on the bench sometimes and then when you play you have to try and show people what you can do.

Of course, for me this is the first time in my whole career that I have experienced sitting on the bench. Every player likes to play, but I can understand the decisions. He is the manager and when he puts me in the team I will always try and do my best. I consider myself a good professional and will do a job when needed."

Sami Hyypia in April 2005

"I actually saw our first goal in the dressing room while I was having treatment, so that was pretty strange. I was on the treatment table and I saw the goal on the TV and heard the roar."

Morientes scored his first goal vs. Middlesbro on 10th of December 2005 when Hyypia was off the field having treatment

"I played alongside two of the greatest centre-backs of all time – Phil Thompson and Mark Lawrenson, Gary Gillespie wasn’t far behind them, he was unlucky with injuries – and Hyypia would fall into that category. I would’ve no problem playing alongside Hyypia. If we played in partnership we’d play off one another and I think he’d be very easy to play alongside. He’s a real quality player."

Alan Hansen on Sami Hyypia in 2000

"Everyone talks about foreign players like Zola, Henry and Bergkamp but they never look at Sami. In terms of consistency he's well up there with them, there's no doubt about it. Maybe he can do something out of the blue every now and again but every week, for nine months of the season, Sami Hyypia is your man. He's definitely one of the best foreign players this country has ever seen."

Carra praises Hyypia in the summer of 2006

Carra dreams of a team of Hyypias

Jamie Carragher shows his appreciation for Sami Hyypia in December 2005: "Sami has been absolutely superb this season. I thought he was superb last season as well when we won the Champions League. He played a massive part in that. I think there were a few questions asked about Sami's future by people outside the club because I think the manager mentioned he wanted to bring a new centre back in before the start of the season. It never happened for whatever reason and me and Sami have continued to play together and he's been outstanding.

"I think when Sami eventually finishes playing for Liverpool, whenever that is, he'll go down as one of the true greats at this club. I know the fans sing the song for me but Sami deserves as much praise as anyone in the team. I think because he's played so well over the years, he's taken for granted by a lot of fans because you just expect a really solid performance off him. When he does make the odd mistake - which we all do and which I do - it's jumped on now because people say the manager is looking for a new centre-back.

"As I said earlier, no matter what Sami Hyypia does for the rest of his Liverpool career, he will go down in history alongside people like Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson, Phil Thompson, Ron Yeats and Emlyn Hughes for me. His performances, especially when he first came to the club, were as good as anything in Europe and he's certainly taught me a lot about defending.

He's never flustered at the back, he always keeps very cool and calm and I think that's a great thing to have at the back. You can't lose your head because it's a very important position and if you make a mistake at centre-back then there's a good chance the ball could end up in the back of the net.

"Sami's a player who leads by example with his performances and we just take our lead from him. I can't praise him highly enough."

The YNWA.tv forum shows his appreciation in January 2006:

Puma: You can't loose something you never have and Sami has never had pace. He's not 65 for gods sake. A CB can play up to standards much longer than any other outfield player. Granted Sami had a poor game today by his standards but I just can't believe that ppl can slag him off - think about what he's done for the club - even after coming through a 11 game spell without conceding in! Give it a break!

Puma: Sami can obviously take a bit of a rest just as any other. Rafa used Pellegrino last year to do that but that basically worked wonders for our champions league run - not for our premiership run wich in turn says much about Sami Hyypia.

Fact of the matter is that Sami costs us of like a pair of stockings cost Donald Trump. He's been ever present for us and is a real legend in the making - at least for me. He's one of the best readers in the game and possibly the best interceptor of the ball I've ever seen.

I just fundamentaly don't agree that's he's a. slowing down b. past it c. not up to standard and d. easy to play against.

You are true in saying the pressure is on regarding number of games played. I just think Sami and Rafa will handle it.

I'll say this. I don't think anyone we'll sign will dislodge Carra and Sami as our CB pairing for the season.

Vlad JNR: Sami Hyypia is amazing, i would rather have him than most players around in his posistion. How anyone can have a bad word against him is beyond me. He isn't the fastest player around and never really has been. So what?! pace, although an important factor in the 'modern game' isn't everything, and Sami Hyypia has proved it this season, he's been fantastic, and any criticism thrown against his is nit picking at best.

TV cameraman brought Sami to LFC's attention
Did you know Sami Hyypia was brought to Liverpool's attention by a TV cameraman. A chance meeting with former Liverpool chief executive Peter Robinson saw the Reds move quickly to sign the Finnish defender and bring him to Anfield.

Peter Robinson said: "It was mid-way through the 1998-99 season when there was a knock on the door of my office at Anfield. I had never met the chap. He came in and introduced himself as a cameraman who covered football in Europe. He knew we were looking for a strong defender and recommended we take a look at Sami, who was playing for Willem, one of the smaller Dutch clubs. That is how it all started. I passed the message on to Gerard and, over the next few months, members of the staff went to Holland to watch him on several occasions.

We knew Sunderland were also interested but there was a general perception that because of his size, Sami might be too slow for English football. That was not the opinion formed by our backroom staff. Ron, Yeats, Phil Thompson, the late Tom Saunders and Patrice Bergues all thought he was the player we were looking for and, when Gerard confirmed that, we opened talks to bring him to Anfield."
